Today is the 21st of September — the Spring Equinox here in the Southern Hemisphere, a day of balance between light and dark, and the turning point when daylight begins to stretch longer with each passing day.
Even though the calendar marks the start of spring on the 1st of September, I feel it truly begins today — when nature itself seems to exhale after the stillness of winter. There’s a momentum rising. A stirring in both the soil and the soul.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is associated with the Wood element, the Liver organ, and the energy of renewal, growth, and upward movement. It governs planning, decision-making, and vision. After a period of inward stillness in winter, spring invites us to act on what we’ve been quietly tending within.
But just like a seed pushing through the soil, this season of movement can feel intense — especially for those prone to irritability, headaches, tight muscles, or PMS. When Liver Qi is stuck, we feel it: emotionally, physically, and energetically.
That’s why spring is the perfect time to support the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, to stretch gently into motion, and to nourish the Liver — the organ most affected by stress and stagnation.
Just as trees bend with the wind, we, too, must remain flexible in body and mind. This is the season to open the windows, move your limbs, clear your clutter (internally and externally), and lean into new beginnings with grace and vitality.
Spring Wellness Tips in TCM:
1. Move gently and regularly
Stretching, walking, yoga, or qigong helps release Liver tension and keeps Qi moving freely. Don’t overdo it — the key is consistency and flexibility, not intensity.
2. Eat green and seasonal
Spring is the season of green. Sprouts, leafy greens, fresh herbs, and sour foods like lemon and pickles support Liver function and detoxification.
3. Cleanse — gently
Now is a good time to lighten your meals and reduce heavy, greasy foods. Support gentle cleansing through warm water with lemon, dandelion tea, or apple cider vinegar.
4. Express yourself
The Liver governs emotions, especially anger and frustration. Journal, talk, sing, create — find ways to express rather than suppress.
5. Tend to your vision — literally and figuratively
The Liver opens to the eyes. Rest your eyes often and take screen breaks. Spring is also a great time to revisit your goals, plan ahead, and clarify your direction.
6. Acupuncture and seasonal tune-ups
Acupuncture in spring can help unblock stagnation, regulate emotions, ease PMS, and support a smooth seasonal transition.
